Call for Papers, 2019 IATRC Symposium - "Trading for good - Agricultural trade in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation: synergies, obstacles and possible solutions"

We inform you that the 2019 Symposium of the IATRC - International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium will be held at the Hotel Melia Sevilla, Spain,  on June 23-25, 2019.

Climate change, agriculture, food systems and trade are intimately interrelated. Sectors like agriculture need to adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while meeting growing global food demand. Within this context, international trade will experience new dynamics, reflecting the impact of climate change and GHG emissions mitigation, which will alter the comparative advantage and competitiveness of sectors across regions and countries. Connecting economies, trade can play a central role for the adaptation to climate change-related challenges, for example by reallocating food from surplus to deficit regions, hence contributing to food security. Trade can also facilitate international
cooperation for an efficient global distribution of climate change mitigation efforts, and, for example, increase development and transfer of emission-efficient technologies. Conversely, if production moves to countries with no or less stringent mitigation obligations in place, trade could lead to emissions leakage that undermines efforts for global GHG emissions reduction.

Against this background, the symposium is devoted to deepening the knowledge on the linkages between trade and climate change adaptation and mitigation, in order to reflect on synergies, obstacles and possible solutions to govern an era of important challenges.

Papers/proposals are due March 20th, 2019 for first consideration.

The 2019 Symposium of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium (IATRC) will be held at the Hotel Melia Sevilla, Spain, June 23-25. Beyond research exchanges, this 2.5-day meeting is designed to exchange, discuss latest research and deepen the knowledge on the linkages between trade and climate change adaptation and mitigation, benefit the membership and conduct the business of the Consortium.

Sunday, June 23, 2019 will be focused on “Trade and climate change”.

Monday and Tuesday, June 24 & 25, 2019
This memo serves as the first call for paper presentations and organized sessions. We seek your suggestions for all elements of the program, and volunteers to serve as Session Chairpersons or Moderators.

A. Individual Research Paper Presentations
Papers can be completed, work in progress or research planning. These sessions include individual papers and provide an opportunity to report on research results or work in progress, present research plans for critique, and discuss research priorities.

B. Organized Multi-Paper/Panel Discussion Sessions
These sessions, usually organized by one or two individuals, consist of one to four panel members or several paper presentations, followed by open discussion/working format. These sessions may be scheduled as plenary or concurrent.

Send your paper submissions and organized session proposals to the co-chairs (Fabio Santeramo, Dragan Miljkovic, Emanuele Ferrari) via e-mail (JRC-SEVILLE-IATRC2019@ec.europa.eu), by March 20th, 2019

Papers and proposals received after March 20th will be accepted on quality and space-available basis.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
